Limerick is a city where history lingers not just in stone, but in shadow. Beneath its medieval towers and Georgian façades lies a darker legacy - one of tragedy, mystery, and restless spirits. From ancient castles and forgotten strongholds to riverside ruins and city-centre buildings, Limerick offers no shortage of places steeped in supernatural lore.
West of the city, hidden in the overgrowth near Shanagolden, lie the crumbling remains of a 13th-century monastery with a grim past. The Abbey of St Catherine de O’Conyl - now more infamously known as the Abbey of the Black Hag - is haunted by stories of witchcraft, papal condemnation, and the tormented ghost of an abbess said to have dabbled in the dark arts. But she’s not the only restless soul. The Countess of Desmond, buried alive in a makeshift grave nearby, is also said to scream through the ruins.
Closer to the city centre, the former Dunnes Stores building on Sarsfield Street has long been associated with unnerving activity. Staff spoke of a locked upstairs room that caused sudden distress in children and unease among adults. Security guards heard unexplained noises, and reports span decades - including sightings of a ghostly man in tweed, a phantom figure on the roof, and a lift operating with no one inside.
Then there’s Thomond Bridge, one of Limerick’s oldest crossings, whose stones have witnessed centuries of conflict and death. Its most enduring legend is that of the Grey Lady - also known locally as The Limerick Banshee. She’s seen at night, pacing the parapet or gazing mournfully into the Shannon. Whether she was a grieving widow, a tragic bride, or the bishop’s tormented wife, her sorrow still echoes across the river - and into the city’s haunted past.
These are just a few of Limerick’s ghost stories. Read on to uncover the full list of haunted locations.
