County Donegal’s wild terrain - lonely mountain passes, windswept shorelines, and remote historic homes - has long been associated with a certain unease. But in a handful of locations, that feeling is more than just atmosphere. These are places where unexplained phenomena have been witnessed first-hand and reported with consistency over time.
At Barnesmore Gap, one of Donegal’s most persistent modern ghost stories was first reported in 1983. A motorist travelling through the remote pass picked up a young woman on the roadside. As they neared the top of the pass, she turned to him and said, “This is where I died,”—before vanishing from the moving car. Her description and the location have been echoed in subsequent accounts, making this one of Ireland’s best-known phantom hitchhiker cases.
Near Ards Friary , on the shores of Sheephaven Bay, several walkers have independently reported seeing a woman in a white blouse and long skirt silently moving along the woodland path or beach. While rare, the reports have remained consistent in appearance and location over the years, despite no known historical interpretation or promotional influence.
And in Sharon Rectory, near Manorcunningham, a private family home has become the focus of sustained media and paranormal interest. Built in the 18th century as a Church of Ireland rectory, the building has been home to a range of disturbing reports: unexplained scratches, temperature drops, camera malfunctions, and sightings of what’s now referred to as the Blue Lady. The current owners have spoken publicly about the activity, which has been covered in national media and featured in BBC documentaries.

Donegal is not gentle. It is a county of cliffs and crashing Atlantic swell, of lonely roads that wind through mountains, and of houses that stand watching the horizon long after their stories have turned to whispers.
Here, folklore feels close to the surface. The landscape itself carries memory - from ancient ringforts and ruined churches to remote manor houses and windswept headlands where tragedy and legend intertwine. Donegal’s beauty is vast, but so too is its history.
Below, you’ll find carefully selected tours and experiences that allow you to explore Donegal properly - guided coastal drives, heritage sites, historic houses, cultural experiences, and atmospheric locations steeped in story.
