The original Wexford Bridge was the site of a brutal massacre during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. At the time, more than 70 loyalists were brought here by the United Irishmen and were speared before their bodies were thrown into the river. Later on, several leaders of the rebellion were also executed on the bridge in an act of retaliation.

Although the bridge structure has since been replaced, witnesses have reported hearing disembodied screams in the area and some attribute these to the men who perished at the site all those years ago.
