In 2014, the sight of a mysterious figure was sighted in a photograph taken on board of a carriage of the Slieve Callan steam engine at the West Clare Railway museum.
The photographer, Ray Byrne, was adamant that there was no one on the carriage at the time the photograph was taken. The owner Jackie Whelan is adamant that the sight is that of a ghost as there are bushes seen through the transparent figure.
Whelan has stated he has heard stories of various ghostly figures wandering the local roads, especially around Christmas of a ghost coming from the direction of Doonbeg towards Moyasta, where West Clare Railway is located.
Whelan concluded that he is considering spending a night alone in the steam engine in an effort to establish if the ghostly figure is a regular passenger.
