One of the area’s most enduring tales tells of a family haunted not by terror, but by love. A husband and wife lived in the home with their large brood of young children. Tragedy struck when the mother passed away during childbirth, leaving the family devastated. Overwhelmed with grief, the father turned to drink, leaving the care of the younger children to his eldest daughter, Mary.
Still a child herself, Mary struggled with the enormous responsibility. One night, as the youngest child grew particularly restless, Mary thought of fetching a special blanket their mother used to calm them and help them sleep. As if in answer to her thought, the bedroom door opened, and the fully formed spirit of their mother appeared, carrying the very blanket. She soothed her children, who fell asleep peacefully, unafraid of the ghostly presence.
A few nights later, the spirit returned to do the same, prompting the father to seek guidance from the local priest. The priest explained that the mother’s spirit could not rest due to her concern for her children.
Moved by this revelation, the father resolved to change his ways. He gave up drinking and took responsibility for his family. His transformation seemed to bring the mother peace, as her ghost was never seen again.
