Set on a private island in the River Suir, Waterford Castle is a place where history stretches back more than a thousand years.
Long before stone towers and noble lords, the island was home to monks who sought peace and seclusion. But isolation brought danger, and by the 9th century Vikings had seized the site, renaming it “Dane’s Island” and fortifying it for defense. In the 12th century, Maurice Fitzgerald was granted the land, and for more than eight centuries the Fitzgerald family would call it home.
The Fitzgeralds shaped the castle that stands today—a strong keep enhanced in the 19th century with Gothic wings, gargoyles, and flourishes of grandeur. In 1958 the property passed into new ownership, and by 1988 it had been transformed into one of Ireland’s most atmospheric hotels, accessible only by ferry.
Today, Waterford Castle offers 19 elegant bedrooms, fine dining, and activities including golf, with the vibrant city of Waterford just a short distance away. But the setting also carries echoes of the past.
Guests and staff have long reported sightings of a lady in a flowing gown moving near the staircase or along the upper corridors. The dining room and conservatory are said to hold her presence too. Many believe her to be Mary Fitzgerald, the last of her family to live here. Unlike the darker tales found in some castles, Mary’s spirit is said to be warm and welcoming.
One visitor recalled waking in the night and sensing a presence in the room—“not at all fearful,” they said, “but with a feeling of kindness.” A former manager confirmed that many guests had shared similar experiences, describing encounters as gentle, even joyful—“as if the spirits were happy to have people staying here.”
Reports of ethereal music, children’s laughter, and footsteps in empty rooms only add to the castle’s air of enchantment.

We were unaware of the stories until one of the ghosts gently woke me up in the middle of the night. Don’t worry, it was a friendly experience. My husband did some research the next morning and we asked the staff. There are some fascinating stories out there and I would advise doing some research so you can embrace Waterford Castle’s spirit guests!
