Since the 1970s, the quiet stretch of Upper Dunmurry Lane in Drumbeg has been associated with one of the area’s most unsettling apparitions. Witnesses have reported the figure of a withered, grief-stricken woman, cradling a small child in her arms. She is said to appear suddenly on or near the roadside before fading into the darkness.

Local tradition offers a tragic explanation. According to an old legend, a highwayman once operated in this district and was eventually captured and hanged for his crimes at a spot near the lane. Overwhelmed by despair, the man’s wife is said to have taken their child’s life before ending her own. It is her restless spirit—burdened by sorrow and forever holding the child she lost—that is believed to wander the road today.

Whether regarded as folklore or as genuine paranormal activity, the tale of the wailing mother of Dunmurry Lane remains one of the most unnerving and enduring ghost stories associated with the Drumbeg area.
