Tully’s Castle in Clondalkin is a rare survivor of the area’s medieval past. Built in the 1500s, it is the last remaining tower house in Clondalkin — an era when there were once three such fortified dwellings in the locality. Its modern name comes from the Tully family, who owned the property during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Today, only a portion of the structure survives, forming part of the boundary wall of a private residence. The remaining section of the adjoining house is not fully visible from the roadside, and anyone wishing to see the rear of the tower must obtain permission from the homeowner.
One of the most distinctive features of Tully’s Castle is the carved stone head set beneath one of its windows. Local tradition claims that this carving represents the daughter of a former owner, whose tragic story became embedded in Clondalkin folklore. As the tale goes, the young woman fell deeply in love, but her choice of partner clashed with her father’s wishes. The romance ended unhappily, and it is said that her sorrowful spirit continues to haunt the tower after nightfall, lingering near the place where her likeness was immortalised in stone.
While the historical origins of the carving remain uncertain, the legend surrounding it has become one of the most enduring ghost stories associated with the site.
