It was a late September evening in 2011 when a woman and her teenage daughter had a chilling encounter along the Banbridge Road, just outside Waringstown. The time was between 8:30pm and 9:00pm, and dusk had begun to settle across the countryside. The road was quiet, the skies dimming, and the hedgerows heavy with autumn mist.

As they drove, their attention was suddenly drawn to something—or someone—on the grassy verge ahead. There, just off the road, was a young girl dressed entirely in white, walking slowly and silently along the edge of the road.

At first glance, they thought it was simply odd—a well-dressed girl walking alone at night. But the details quickly unsettled them. The girl wore a long white gown, old-fashioned in style, and her blonde curly hair framed a soft, round face. On her feet were delicate ballet pumps, starkly out of place for the damp and muddy verge she appeared to be walking on.

Yet her shoes were spotlessly clean, as if untouched by the ground beneath her. She seemed to glide rather than walk—hovering slightly above the grass, with a faint glow surrounding her.

As the car passed her, the girl turned her head and looked directly at the passenger—the daughter—offering a soft, unsettling smile. The driver hadn’t noticed the exchange, but her daughter reacted immediately, urging her mother to turn the car around. “There was something strange about her,” she insisted. “I want to see her again.”

But with another vehicle close behind, turning around wasn’t an option. By the time they circled back a short while later, the girl in white was gone. The stretch of road was empty. There was nowhere nearby she could have vanished so quickly—and no footprints left behind.

Both women were convinced: they hadn’t seen a living person.

When they shared their story with locals in the following days, several people nodded in recognition. They’d heard of similar sightings over the years. Decades ago, a young woman had walked that very route every day. She was known to locals, though her name had faded with time. She had died young, under circumstances long forgotten.

But not entirely, it seems.

Locals believe the figure is the spirit of that same woman, still retracing her familiar path as she did in life. Descriptions from other sightings match: the white dress, the graceful movements, the faint glow, and the feeling that she isn’t quite walking—but gliding.

Far from threatening, the girl’s presence is said to carry an air of gentle melancholy. Those who see her often speak of a strange calm—followed by the certainty that they’ve encountered something beyond explanation.

To this day, sightings of the Waringstown girl in white continue, especially in the fading light of early autumn.
