Near Tuamgraney, a wooded hollow is said to change on Halloween night: paths seem to close in, the wood grows unnaturally dense, and hostile creatures appear. Modern tellings describe a young man meeting a black dog with glowing red eyes, a malevolent hare and a straw-coloured cat before stumbling into a clearing where a black ram with red eyes fought a hind. When he swung his stick the blow passed through mist, yet the ram’s charge winded him. The scene vanished as suddenly as it came. T
he story is tied to Samhain and is only said to occur on 31 October; the exact spot isn’t pinned down beyond “a hollow near Tuamgraney.”
