Tollymore HouseTollymore House, once a grand Georgian mansion in Bryansford near Newcastle, County Down, was built around 1730 by James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Clanbrassil. For generations, it served as the ancestral seat of the Roden family, the Earls of Roden. Nestled at the foot of the Mourne Mountains, the estate is celebrated for its stunning landscape and its close ties to Tollymore Forest Park—Northern Ireland’s first state forest park, established in 1955.

Though the house was demolished in 1952, its legacy lives on through the estate’s surviving architectural landmarks and natural beauty. The park features several notable structures, including the Gothic-style Barbican Gate and the distinctive Clanbrassil Barn, known for its unusual combination of barn design with a church steeple, clock, bell, and sundial.

In the years since the mansion’s demise, local legend has given rise to the tale of a ghostly “Blue Lady” said to roam the forest paths. According to folklore, she wanders the tree-lined avenues of Tollymore, eternally searching for a lost love. While details of her story remain vague, sightings of a sorrowful figure in blue drifting through the woods have been passed down through generations.
