During the 1960s and 1970s, The Wimpy was a popular meeting place in Waterford, remembered for its burgers, milkshakes, and desserts. After the restaurant closed, a shopping centre was later constructed on the same site.
During redevelopment works, builders reportedly uncovered human remains believed to be part of an earlier burial ground. This discovery led to speculation that the land itself had a much older and more troubled history – and may explain why The Wimpy had long been regarded by staff as a haunted workplace.
Situated on Arundel Square (formerly Broad Street), the restaurant was said to be most active after hours. One staff member, who regularly opened the premises early on Sunday mornings, claimed that on several occasions they heard their name being called out loudly from upstairs. Assuming it was the manager, they went to investigate, only to find the upper floor empty and the building otherwise deserted.
Another incident was reported by a group of women who had finished their shift late one evening. As they locked up and climbed into a waiting taxi, the driver remarked that he was waiting for “the woman at the window” to come down. The staff told him that no one else was inside — they had just closed the building themselves. The driver was left visibly shaken, unable to account for the figure he believed he had seen standing at an upstairs window.
Whether these experiences were coincidence, imagination, or something stranger, The Wimpy became locally known as one of Waterford’s most talked-about haunted workplaces of its era — a reputation that only grew after the later discovery of graves beneath the site.
