The Tyrone Guthrie Centre (Annaghmakerrig House) opened in 1981 in the former home of theatrical director, Sir Tyrone Guthrie. When Guthrie passed away, the property was bequeathed to the Irish state on condition that it be used as an artistic retreat, and the property remains in use for the purposes he expressed. Actors, artists and writers have availed of the peace and seclusion that the property offers in the main house and surrounding cottages, but one of the characters from times past has also stayed on on.
“Miss Worby’s Room” is affectionately referred to as the “haunted room”. Miss Worby served as a lady’s maid and confidant to Lady Guthrie. It is said that when she passed away, her wish for her body to be brought back to her homeland (England) was denied by her son on the basis of cost, and as a result, her spirit remains at the centre. Witnesses have described a gentle soul who is carrying out her role in death as she did in life, checking on rooms and that all is well. Her figure has been spotted on the stairs and in guest bedrooms. Guests have also reported feeling someone sitting on the end of their bed, even though there is nobody in the room with them.
Another visitor reported hearing the sound of a cello and convivial chatter while walking through the grounds one night, but there was nobody to be seen.
