Before closing in 1930, the Tivoli Variety Theatre was one of Dublin’s busiest music halls — and, according to stage lore, one of its most haunted. Staff swore that a backstage door could never stay closed, no matter how it was secured. The phenomenon was blamed on the ghost of a young chorus girl who was said to have taken her own life within the theatre.

Even after the Tivoli was demolished, actors who remembered the building claimed that the “door that never shut” was a quiet tribute to the performer who never took her final bow.

A non-descript office block now stands on the site.
