The Royal School House in Raphoe is long said to harbour a restless spirit. Beneath the old building lies a sealed underground passage, once believed to have connected the school to nearby Raphoe Castle, the former stronghold of the Bishops of Raphoe.
According to local legend, a lady of the castle met a terrible fate in this very tunnel. She was reportedly hanged beneath the ground, though no one knows for certain whether it was by execution or betrayal. Her infant son was said to have been taken away — to the site where the boarding house now stands — and the grief of that separation, they say, has never lifted.
Over the generations, students and staff alike have spoken of strange happenings in the school: sudden drops in temperature, the sound of soft weeping in empty rooms, and glimpses of a pale woman in old-fashioned dress wandering the corridors and stairways.
Those who have seen her believe it is the Lady of the Tunnel, still searching for the child who was taken from her centuries ago.
