The Royal Marine Hotel, a luxury establishment, was first built in 1863, though the site itself has a long history dating back to 1828. Originally home to Hayes Hotel, which overlooked the stunning Dublin Bay, the property was purchased by William Dargan—famous for constructing Ireland’s first railway between Dublin and Kingstown (now Dún Laoghaire). When the Royal Marine Hotel was built, parts of the original Hayes Hotel were incorporated into the new design.
The newly developed Royal Marine Hotel opened its doors in 1865 and has since become a cornerstone of Dublin and Dún Laoghaire.
Regarded as one of Dublin’s premier 4-star hotels, the Royal Marine has hosted an array of distinguished guests, including heads of state, kings, queens, and celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Laurel & Hardy, and Charlie Chaplin. Queen Victoria herself visited Dún Laoghaire and enjoyed a lavish 16-course breakfast at the hotel shortly after her arrival. Additionally, it’s believed that Irish revolutionary Michael Collins used Room 210 as a hideout with his partner, Kitty Kiernan.
I have seen some anecdotal references to the hotel being haunted, but can find no specific examples of alleged encounters. If you have experienced anything unusual here, please do share your experience.
