Built in 1803, the County Infirmary on Battery Road served generations of Longford residents and formed an important part of the town’s early medical infrastructure. Established during a period when county infirmaries were being created across Ireland to provide surgical and medical treatment for the poor, the institution operated for well over a century before its eventual closure late in the twentieth century.

Local tradition holds that the infirmary’s first resident physician was a man remembered as Dr. Dubedat, said to have been of French Huguenot descent. Folklore surrounding the doctor suggests that he was regarded as a capable and conscientious practitioner, deeply committed to the welfare of his patients. Stories later circulated that his dedication to the hospital did not end with his death.

Throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, staff and patients reportedly claimed to encounter an apparition believed to be the doctor himself. Witnesses described a solitary figure walking the corridors at night, occasionally pausing beside beds as though checking on the sick, adjusting blankets, or standing quietly at the end of a ward. While such sightings gradually became less frequent as the decades passed, accounts persisted well into the hospital’s later years.

One particularly enduring tradition maintained that, whenever a patient died within the building, a low, mournful sound could sometimes be heard moving along the corridors—said by some to be the lingering presence of the old physician still attending to his final duties. These stories continued to circulate locally until the hospital ceased operation in the late twentieth century, becoming part of the broader folklore attached to the former infirmary site.
