The Mourne Bar was known for its unsettling atmosphere – so much so that one former owner declared its demolition the best thing that ever happened to the building.
Today, a department store stands on the site, but it remains unclear whether the spirits that haunted the pub moved on or lingered in the area. During its time, the bar was the setting for numerous eerie occurrences. Witnesses reported the sound of phantom footsteps echoing ominously through the attic and the unsettling noise of furniture being dragged violently across the upper rooms. The chilling cries of someone weeping in despair added to the building’s haunting reputation.
One owner shared a particularly unnerving experience. Every time she attempted to climb the stairs to the attic, she would encounter an icy, invisible barrier on one specific step, making it impossible for her to proceed further.
