In 2006, the Daily Mirror reported that singer Samantha Mumba requested to be moved from her luxurious hotel room after fearing it was haunted.
The 23-year-old singer reportedly fled her five-star suite at the Merchant Hotel in Belfast after she claimed to have seen a ghost in the room. A hotel guest shared, “Samantha came down to reception, visibly shaken, and told staff she believed her room was haunted. She asked to be relocated, and the staff were very accommodating. She was clearly freaked out.”
A friend of Mumba’s revealed, “She was absolutely convinced her room was haunted, and it really frightened her.”
Mumba had been in Belfast for promotional work and was staying at the Merchant Hotel, which had just opened that year in the historic 150-year-old Ulster Bank building in the city center.
Petra Devitt, a spokesperson for the hotel, said, “This is the first time we’ve had a guest who felt ‘spooked,’ but we were more than happy to move Ms. Mumba.”
Devitt also hinted at a possible ghostly presence, saying, “If any place in the building were to be haunted, it might be linked to Robert Grimshaw, one of the former directors of the Ulster Bank. He tragically fell to his death down the building’s steps shortly after it opened in 1860.”
