The Lyric Theatre first opened on Ridgeway Street in 1968 and stood for four decades before being demolished in 2008. A new theatre was built on the same site and reopened in 2011, carrying forward the Lyric’s cultural legacy.
But even before redevelopment, the old building had a reputation for being haunted. Crew and performers whispered of a shadowy figure crossing the stage just before curtain-up — thought by many to be the spirit of a former actor reluctant to take his final bow. Others recalled faint, indistinct voices drifting through the empty auditorium during rehearsals. One technician even swore he saw a man seated in the stalls while adjusting the lights, only to find the seats completely empty when he looked again.
And while the building itself is gone, some believe the ghosts never left. To this day, there are those who claim the spirits of the Lyric still linger in the new theatre, keeping watch from the wings.
