Lord Edward Fitzgerald, a staunch opponent of the crown, played a crucial role in planning the rebellion at the start of the nineteenth century. However, he never witnessed the uprising, as he was discovered hiding on nearby Thomas Street. Attempts to arrest him for treason ensued, and although he fought fiercely, he was gravely wounded. Despite his injuries, he was taken to Newgate Gaol, where he later succumbed to his wounds. He was buried in St. Werburgh’s Church, directly across from the pub bearing his name. Legend has it that Lord Edward’s ghost still haunts the bar, watching over and protecting those within.
