The Golden Jubilee pub, which once stood along Cromac Street and Market Street, was like many Belfast bars in having its own ghost story. According to local accounts, a barman was on duty one quiet afternoon when a stranger walked in. The man’s appearance immediately struck him: he wore distinctly old-fashioned clothing, and although the weather outside was dry, his garments looked as if they were drenched.
Finishing the task he was working on, the barman intended to take the customer’s order in a moment. But when he turned back, the bar had fallen completely silent — and the man had vanished. There had been no sound of footsteps, no door opening, and no possible way for anyone to leave so quickly without being seen.
What makes the story truly remarkable is the identity the barman later claimed for the apparition. He maintained that he had seen the man clearly enough to recognise both his clothing and his features — and insisted that the figure was none other than Roger Casement. Why Casement, an Irish revolutionary executed in 1916, would be connected to this Belfast bar remains entirely unknown. No historical link has ever been established, leaving the sighting one of the city’s more curious and unexplained pub hauntings.
