On the southern slopes of Slievemore Mountain on Achill Island lies one of Ireland’s most evocative historical landscapes. Stretching for nearly a mile, the Deserted Village consists of the stone remains of eighty to a hundred cottages, their roofless shells forming three parallel rows along an old trackway.
The houses were occupied from the 1700s until the years following the Great Famine, after which they fell gradually into ruin. Many were later reused seasonally by islanders who moved their cattle to the mountain pastures during the summer months — a tradition known as booleying. Archaeological evidence, however, shows that people lived on these slopes long before the cottages were built: nearby megalithic tombs and field systems date back over five thousand years, to the Neolithic period.
Today, the site is open to visitors and maintained as a monument to Achill’s past. The mountain air is sharp and still, and only the wind moves through the empty doorways — yet some who have walked here speak of more than echoes of history.
Although no formal investigations have been recorded, anecdotal accounts from visitors describe mist-shrouded figures glimpsed among the cottages, or the sound of footsteps and low voices when the slopes appear otherwise deserted. Local guides and travel writers often refer to it as “the ghost village of Achill”, a phrase that captures both its desolation and its enduring mystery.
Whether these stories arise from the imagination, the shifting weather, or something older that lingers on Slievemore’s hillside, the Deserted Village remains one of the most atmospheric and haunting sites in Ireland.
