If you’re planning a trip to the Giant’s Causeway, there’s one place to stay that offers far more than sweeping views of the stones.
The Causeway Hotel, built in 1836, stands right at the edge of this world-famous landmark. With its whitewashed façade, sash windows, and 28 en-suite rooms, it provides a quaint yet comfortable base in the heart of a dramatic and ancient landscape.
But the hotel’s charm isn’t found only in its location. For generations, guests and staff alike have spoken of otherworldly encounters—apparitions, footsteps in empty corridors, and unexplained sounds. Far from sinister, these spirits are said to be more mischievous than menacing. Even the management has acknowledged the tales, once quipping on social media that if you were a ghost with class and panache, this is exactly where you’d choose to haunt.
Guests have their own stories to tell. One visitor rang reception to ask if the hotel was haunted, only to confess that he had just seen a woman gliding past his room—at least a foot above the ground. On another occasion, a duty manager locking up the dining room late at night heard children laughing and playing near the tables. When he went to check, the room was empty.
Stranger still, another manager clearing down the kitchen one evening heard a loud clatter after moving to the neighbouring bar. When he returned, a single spoon lay in the middle of the spotless floor, with no explanation of how it could have fallen.
And more than one guest has reported the chilling sight of a soldier’s ghost standing silently in front of a fireplace.
