According to local folklore, the Maguire family once asked a young stable hand to purposely injure one of their opponent’s horses so that the animal would be unfit to race. But the young lad refused and was murdered for his “insubordination”. His body was hastily buried under a flagstone in the stable yard but was eventually unearthed some 300 years later when the property was in the hands of the Langham family. The story continued that for some (unfathomable) reason, they brought his skull into the house, and that this triggered a series of disturbances. Strange sounds were reported and objects moved of their own accord. When the skull was later buried in the garden, the disturbances calmed down slightly, but the ghost of the young man was seen around the property on occasion. It was also claimed that his ghost caused animals to panic if they were left for too long in the stable.
