Summerhill House in county Meath dates to 1731. In its time, it would have been a fine Palladian house with 100 rooms and would have had many elegant features which demonstrated the wealth of its owners, the Baronets, Barons and Viscounts Langford. The property was a target for Irish rebels who did eventually seize control, taking back the land from the British before finally torching the great house itself.

The property was left a sad and isolated but imposing ruin. It was often visited by people who were out walking. One report that I have seen referenced how a woman’s dogs were clearly scared by something as they walked around the site. As they continued their stroll, they felt themselves that they were not alone and even thought they saw movement in one of the windows. As they prepared to leave, she and her daughter both saw the ghost of an old man standing in the laneway, smoking a pipe. They could even smell the smoke! They concluded that he must have been a worker at some point, but did not hang around.
