Edgeworthstown was once the home of Maria Edgeworth, a renowned writer of both children’s and adult literature. Although she spent much of her early life in England, her years in Ireland greatly influenced her views on Irish culture. Over time, she began to advocate for equal status for the Irish people, a theme reflected in many of her works.
A noted feminist, Edgeworth also spoke out in favour of greater rights for women, including political participation. Her progressive ideas were shaped in part by the Enlightenment, the intellectual and philosophical movement that swept across Europe during the 18th century.
Maria Edgeworth died in Edgeworthstown at the age of 81 from a sudden heart attack. Yet, her presence is still said to linger—locals have reported ghostly sightings of her wandering the streets of the town.
