Saint Stephen’s Church, more commonly known as The Pepper Canister, is a Church of Ireland chapel-of-ease serving the parish of the same name in Dublin, Ireland. Located on Mount Street Upper, the church was originally designed by John Bowden in 1821 and later completed by Joseph Welland following Bowden’s death.

The church’s distinctive nickname, The Pepper Canister, comes from the unique shape of its spire, which resembles a traditional pepper shaker.

Initially intended as a chapel-of-ease for St Peter’s Church on Aungier Street—then the largest Church of Ireland parish in Dublin—Saint Stephen’s has since taken on a vibrant new role. In recent years, it has become an active space not only for religious services but also for concerts, cultural events, and community gatherings.

According to some sources, the church is haunted although I can find no definite accounts of alleged activity to back this up. However, a popular legend suggests that if you walk around the church three times, the devil himself will appear to you. Can’t help but think that the devil must live in Dublin as he seems to pop up in quite a few of these old stories.
