On 23rd September 2022, two mass-goers, Mary Tynan and Nelly Cosgrave, claimed to witness an apparition of Padre Pio, the revered Italian saint, during a commemorative Mass at St. Saviour’s Church in Limerick.

The service marked the 54th anniversary of Padre Pio’s death and was attended by approximately 500 people. A local prayer group brought with them an enlarged photograph, originally taken during a similar Mass at the church in 2018, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the saint’s passing. According to the two women, the image displayed a bright, shifting light that gradually morphed into a clear silhouette of Padre Pio, dressed in his traditional brown Capuchin habit.

Will Stokes, who appears in the 2018 photo, stated he did not see any apparition at the time but did experience a “strange presence” around his head. He recalled:

Someone blew on the back of my neck and the hair actually stood up. I turned around to see if anyone was there, but there wasn’t. Then it happened again—a gentle brushing on my neck, like a calming gesture. I didn’t think much more of it at the time.

While no conclusive evidence of a supernatural presence was recorded, the claims generated considerable interest among the faithful, particularly those devoted to Padre Pio, a figure long associated with miraculous experiences and spiritual phenomena.
