Local tradition holds that many years ago, during an evening Mass at Saint Mary’s Church in Wolfhill, tragedy struck. As the service reached its midpoint, the officiating priest collapsed suddenly on the altar and died, shocking his small rural congregation. The church remained closed for some time afterward, and for a year it stood in sombre silence.

Exactly one year later, on the anniversary of his death, an extraordinary event occurred. Late at night, the locked and empty church was seen to glow with an unearthly light, and those nearby heard the clear sound of a priest reciting the Mass from within.

The ghostly service continued as though performed by unseen hands, but at the very moment the priest had died the previous year, the voice ceased and the light vanished.

This mysterious occurrence repeated itself for three or four consecutive years, each time on the same night, until a brave local priest decided to confront the phenomenon. He kept vigil within the church on the anniversary, waiting in silence until the phantom Mass began. As the unseen celebrant reached the fateful point in the liturgy, the priest stepped forward and completed the remainder of the Mass aloud.

From that night onward, the haunting ceased.
