St. Loman’s Hospital, originally named the Mullingar Lunatic Asylum, opened its doors in 1855 and operated for over a century. Thousands of patients passed through its halls, often enduring harsh conditions, with many believing they were wrongly committed.

Among its residents was Julia Caffrey Leonard, a 32-year-old housekeeper. After confronting her husband over suspected infidelity, she poured hot tea over him in a moment of anger. This act led to her being declared mentally incapacitated and confined to the asylum, where she remained for 22 years. Each day, Julia protested her confinement, crying out for her freedom, her pleas echoing the despair felt by many others within the institution. St. Loman’s finally closed its doors in 2013, but the anguish of its history lingers.

Today, the asylum is notorious for reports of paranormal activity. Witnesses have described shadowy figures darting through the ruins and disembodied sounds, including phantom footsteps and distant cries. Some claim to have seen ghostly patients wandering the grounds, while others report sudden drops in temperature and an oppressive sense of sadness. One chilling account comes from a photographer who captured an image of the abandoned St. Bridget’s Ward, appearing to show a face peering out from one of its empty windows—a haunting reminder of those who never truly left.

Editor’s Note
St Loman’s Hospital is located not too far from where I live and I have heard that staff do not like entering certain parts of it alone. However, the face at the window (sadly) turned out to be a scarecrow!
