St. Joseph’s Hospital, formerly the Limerick District Lunatic Asylum, was established in 1827, with archival records dating back to its founding.

At its peak, the hospital housed over 1,000 patients and employed more than 400 staff. It operated as a self-sufficient institution with its own bakery, laundry, butcher, tailor, upholstery services, and workshops. Full-time tradespeople—including masons, carpenters, groundskeepers, and painters—were employed to maintain the extensive grounds and facilities.

Daily life was meticulously documented in “Morning Statement” books, which recorded the activities of patients, many of whom worked in the kitchens, laundries, or sewing rooms.

Patients came from all social backgrounds and religious denominations, and most were adults. Admissions were made for a wide variety of reasons, including epilepsy, dementia, brain disease, sunstroke, and even the effects of climate.

As with asylums all over the country, there are anecodptal references to “apparitions” and “unexplained occurrences”. If you have further information, please Suggest an Amendment.
