According to local tradition, following a lightning strike in 1863, a workman was engaged to inspect and clean the damaged spire. As a precaution, he secured himself with safety ropes before ascending. While carrying out repairs near the top, he reportedly slipped. In a cruel twist of fate, the rope intended to protect him is said to have tightened around his neck, strangling him as he fell.
Unable to reach him immediately, the man allegedly remained suspended high above the town for many hours – some accounts say for the better part of a day – before his body could be retrieved.
In later years, townspeople claimed that on stormy nights – particularly when lightning splits the sky – a figure can sometimes be glimpsed hanging from the spire, swaying against the wind. The apparition is described not as an active haunting, but as a residual image: a man suspended in the moment of his fatal fall.
As with many such stories, the account survives in oral tradition rather than formal church record.
