Formerly an industrial school, St. David’s College in Artane carries with it a sombre piece of local folklore. Generations of pupils have whispered about the ghost known as “The Blue Boy,” said to be the restless spirit of a former student who met a tragic end during the institution’s harsher era.
According to one version of the tale, the boy was subjected to a cruel punishment: forced to run outside in deep winter, wearing little more than the thin garments issued by the school. As the snow fell and temperatures dropped, he eventually collapsed and died from hypothermia, his skin turning a bluish colour—hence the nickname that endured long after his death.
Another version of the story claims a far more dramatic ending. In this retelling, the boy climbed to the cross atop the school building and leapt to his death, driven either by despair or attempting a reckless escape.
Whichever version one believes, the folklore agrees on one point: the spirit of the Blue Boy has never left the grounds.
Students and locals claim that on Halloween night, his apparition can be seen running across the grounds, his form flickering like a pale blue shadow. Others insist they have seen him leap from the roof, re-enacting the moment of his supposed fall—only to vanish before he hits the ground.
