The magnificent Sopwell Hall in County Tipperary, dates to the mid-eighteenth century. In 1655, Colonel Thomas Sadleir, a Cromwellian soldier, was granted some 8,000 acres of land across counties Tipperary, Clare & Galway. This included Kinelagh Castle which had been seized from an Irish Clan by Cromwell’s forces. The house we see today was constructed by Francis Sadleir and was renamed ‘Sopwell Hall’ in deference to a property in the UK which bears the same name.
It is said, that following the death of Francis, his son and a friend drank heavily and attempted to move the coffin from where it was located and carry it downstairs. Of course, in their drunken state, they dropped the coffin and it crashed down the steps. It is said, that this act is repeated to this day. Witnesses report hearing a scream followed by the sound of a heavy object thumping down the empty staircase.
Please note that this is private property and as of June 2021, it is for sale. Unless you have the €8,500,000 that is being sought for it, you should probably stay away.
