In the 19th century, Shandy Hall, located just outside the village of Dripsey, was the home of retired British Army surgeon Dr. Philip Cross and his wife. The tragic events that followed would bring worldwide attention to the property.
Dr. Cross became infatuated with a young governess hired by his wife, and his obsession quickly grew. Sensing something was amiss, Mrs. Cross sent the governess away. In a twisted plot, Dr. Cross poisoned his wife, leading to her death. Shortly after, he married the young governess and brought her to live at Shandy Hall. However, this brief new life was shattered when Dr. Cross was arrested, tried for the murder of his wife, and executed at Cork City Gaol.
The restless spirit of Mrs. Cross is said to haunt Shandy Hall, and she has been seen both inside the building and along the road in front of it. Strange lights, possibly orbs, have also been reported in the area, adding to the eerie legend of this tragic tale.
