Screebe House was used as a summer residence house by the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, William Ward, who served in this role from 1902 to 1905. His wife Rachel Ward was the Countess of Dudley and she was well known for her philanthropy work. However, it was during the year 1920, that this marriage would come to an end.

On 26th June 1920, Rachel went for a swim at the lake that was located at the back of the residence. Although she was enjoying herself, she suddenly found herself in trouble and ultimately drowned, sinking below the waters surface.

Now turned into a hotel, the spirit of Rachel is said to haunted one of the rooms. Guests have left the room in the middle of the night, claiming they have felt uneasy or getting a strange feeling in the room. Guests have also described the room as being freezing cold.
