Scarlet Street in Drogheda takes its name from the brutal events of 1649, when Oliver Cromwell and his army stormed the town. The assault resulted in the mass killing of both defenders and civilians, and local tradition holds that the street earned its name from the blood that ran there during the massacre.
Those who walk along Scarlet Street today sometimes report an uneasy feeling. It is said that the spirits of the slain still linger, bound to the place of their violent end.
