Rathkeale Cemetery in County Limerick is steeped in eerie folklore, most notably the tale of a ghostly woman who haunted the churchyard. According to legend, anyone who laid eyes on her was doomed to die shortly afterward. One version of the story tells of a brave local man who confronted the apparition, severing her arm with a sword and banishing her by praying through the night.

Another chilling tale involves a Countess said to have been buried alive beneath the altar. Her desperate cries for help, directed at her husband, are still said to echo through the cemetery for those who dare to listen.

In 2009, the Limerick Newswire carried a story which claimed that a tree stump in the cemetery held the likeness on of the Virgin Mary and her Child. This lead to hundreds of visitors visiting the site to offer prayers.
