On a bend of the Rine (An Rinn), the roofless yet remarkably intact remains of Quin Abbey rise over the village of Quin. The friary stands on the foundations of an earlier Anglo-Norman castle: its massive corner piers were reused in the church you see today. Most of the complex is 15th-century, traditionally linked to Sioda Cam Mac Namara and established for the Franciscan Friars Minor. Though suppressed in the 16th century, the friars returned whenever peace allowed; the last community faded in the early 1800s. Cloister, refectory, fine tracery and a central tower make Quin one of Ireland’s best-preserved medieval friaries.

Local tradition says a Franciscan monk still keeps watch among the arches.

In 2003, a couple visiting at dusk split up between nave and south aisle. The man, filming beneath an arch, glanced at his camcorder and started—a monk’s face stared from the monitor. When he looked up, the arch was empty. According to Eddie Lenihan, a group of boys once entered the ruin hunting for buried treasure. They too reported the sudden appearance of a tonsured face peering from a shadowed opening—the same visage described years later.

Witnesses speak of cold eddies moving against the wind, the dry rustle of habit cloth along the cloister walk, and the feeling of being quietly observed from the choir screen. No names, no dates—just a presence that belongs to the place.
