Originally constructed in 1805 as a private residence, the building on Fair Street took on a new role in 1813, when the Presentation Sisters established a school and convent for girls on the premises. As student numbers increased, the property was remodelled throughout the 19th century to meet growing educational demands. In 1858, a new two-storey structure was built on the site of the original school to better accommodate both the sisters and their pupils.
By 1990, the building was deemed no longer viable for the order’s needs. The Presentation Sisters withdrew, with some relocating to communities in Dublin and Kilcock, while others moved to the Greenhills centre in Drogheda. The former convent was later sold and repurposed as office space.
Like many former religious institutions in Ireland, the site has been shadowed by past controversies, with the Presentation Order named in various national investigations into institutional abuse. While no specific public allegations have been tied to this exact building, some believe the lingering atmosphere is shaped by this broader historical context.
Today, the building is said to be haunted. Visitors and tenants have reported feelings of being watched, sudden cold spots, and inexplicable movement of interior doors and the lift, despite no mechanical explanation. These experiences have contributed to the building’s reputation as one of the more quietly unsettling locations in Drogheda.
