Long ago, in the shadow of the Derryveagh Mountains, there lived a young woman named Brigid O’Malley, renowned throughout the glen for her beauty, grace, and gentle heart. Brigid fell deeply in love with a young man from a rival clan, a match that was doomed from the start. The long-standing feud between the O’Malleys and their enemies ran deep, and when tensions finally erupted into a bloody skirmish in the valley now known as the Poisoned Glen, tragedy followed.
Desperate to stop the fighting and save the man she loved, Brigid is said to have rushed into the heart of the battle — only to be struck down amid the chaos, dying in the very place where she had hoped to bring peace.
Locals believe that her spirit never left the mountains. On still evenings, a misty figure — pale and shimmering — has been seen drifting through the glen, sometimes near the water’s edge, sometimes upon the rocky slopes. Those who have walked there at dusk tell of hearing a woman’s mournful sobbing carried on the wind, echoing through the valleys of Derryveagh.
