During the 1940s, the Sheriff Street area of Dublin’s docklands was still dominated by ageing tenement blocks, many of which were associated with difficult living conditions and the social hardship typical of inner-city housing at the time. Although the buildings themselves have long since been demolished or redeveloped, stories connected with former residents remain part of local memory.
One frequently retold account comes from a woman who grew up in one of the upper-floor flats and later described several unsettling experiences in the building. She recalled that the bedroom she shared with her sisters was located on the third floor, reached by dark stairways that were often lit only by candlelight. On one particularly cold evening, while climbing the stairs, she reported feeling what she described as an icy hand pressing down on her own as it rested on the banister, an experience that frightened her enough to hurry the rest of the way without looking back.
She later described two additional incidents occurring in the bedroom itself. On one occasion, waking just before dawn, she believed she saw a dark, human-shaped figure standing near the fireplace, turned toward the wall. Too frightened to investigate, she pulled the bedclothes over her head until morning. Some time afterward, she claimed to have awakened again to find a similar shadowy form standing at the foot of the bed, this time facing toward her. Although the figure appeared indistinct, she recalled an overwhelming sense that it was watching her, an experience she never forgot.
While no historical records verify paranormal activity in the Sheriff Street tenements, such recollections form part of the personal and community storytelling associated with Dublin’s old inner-city housing, where harsh living conditions, dim lighting, and the atmosphere of ageing buildings often contributed to powerful and enduring local legends.
