Newtownards, a town steeped in centuries of history, holds many secrets — and one of its more poignant tales centres not around an ancient ruin or a windswept battlefield, but around the Newtownards War Memorial, a solemn structure dedicated to those who lost their lives in service.
But according to local accounts, it’s not just the memory of the fallen that lingers here.
Witnesses have reported sightings of a ghostly figure — a man in Victorian dress — standing silently beside the memorial. He is often described as calm and still, gazing into the distance as if searching for someone. He appears most often in the hours before dawn, and always alone. Those who have seen him say he doesn’t interact or acknowledge passers-by. He simply waits.
The story behind the haunting tells of a man who once stood at this very spot — long before the war memorial was erected — waiting to meet someone. On that fateful night, he was allegedly attacked by robbers, beaten, and left for dead. The attackers fled, and the man succumbed to his injuries. The tragedy went largely unrecorded, but the memory — or perhaps the guilt — seems to have left its mark.
And so, it is said, he still returns, pacing gently or standing motionless by the memorial, locked in an eternal vigil. Whether he waits for help, for his attacker to return, or for the person he was meant to meet, no one can say. But those who pass by in the quiet hours may want to take a second look — because the man beside the memorial might not be as solid as he seems.
