On the roads outside Mountrath, Co. Laois, a modern twist on an age-old ghost story is told.
Motorists speak of a young woman who appears by the roadside, often late at night, asking for a lift. She is polite and quiet, and when asked where she wishes to go, she gives a simple reply: “Just drop me at the top of the road for the cemetery.”
When the driver pulls up and lets her out, the figure walks calmly towards the graveyard gates. But if anyone follows to see where she goes, they find no trace of her. Instead, the witness sees the woman slip between the headstones — and fade into nothing.
The story is a Laois version of the well-known vanishing hitchhiker motif found across Ireland and beyond, where the stranger by the roadside is revealed to belong not to the world of the living, but to the realm of the dead.
