In December 2024, The Irish Times reported on a case in which a family alleged in court that they were being tormented by paranormal activity in their new home.
In proceedings before the High Court, the family explained that they had felt forced to leave their previous home due to ongoing issues with mould, which they said had persisted even after the council took steps to address it. The council later placed the family on a transfer list, and they were offered a new property in October.
The family told the court that the new house had a different kind of problem. They claimed that “numerous objects” had “flown from side to side”, that items had fallen from cupboards, doors had opened by themselves, and a table and chairs had moved of their own accord as they watched. They stated that they had contacted the previous occupant and received a letter in which the earlier resident described their own experience in the property as “beyond traumatic.” The family said they felt the council was not taking these concerns seriously.
Mr Justice Garrett Simons struck out the claim against Leitrim County Council on the basis that it was brought in relation to issues with the first property and that these had been resolved by the transfer to a new one. He noted that any complaints in relation to the second property would require a fresh application to the council and, if necessary, a further court case. He acknowledged the family’s stated concerns about the alleged disturbances but said they were outside the remit of the case before him.
