Mount Stewart is a magnificent neo-classical mansion set amidst immaculately landscaped gardens on the tranquil shores of Strangford Lough in County Down. Built in the early 19th century, it became the principal residence of the influential Stewart family, most notably Lady Edith Vane-Tempest-Stewart, the Marchioness of Londonderry. A celebrated society hostess and political figure, Lady Edith’s grand vision shaped much of the house’s opulent interiors and the sweeping, ornamental gardens that still captivate visitors today.

The estate remained in the hands of the Londonderry family until it was entrusted to the National Trust, which now preserves both the stately home and its extraordinary gardens. Mount Stewart is particularly renowned for its stunning blend of Italian, Spanish, and formal garden designs, offering a landscape as rich in beauty as it is in history.

Yet beyond its grandeur, Mount Stewart holds more than a few lingering mysteries…

One of the most enduring tales is that of a phantom pianist. Visitors and staff alike have reported hearing soft, melancholic piano music drifting through the grand rooms—often when no one is near the music room. Many believe it is the lingering spirit of Lady Edith herself, still entertaining unseen guests in the grand style she so adored.

An elegant spectral figure, dressed in Edwardian fashion, has also been seen wandering the Long Gallery and gliding gracefully down the grand staircases. Thought to be the restless spirit of Lady Edith, she is often sighted during times of significant restoration work—as if overseeing and safeguarding the home she once ruled with such authority.

Out in the quieter corners of the vast gardens, a more subtle presence lingers. Visitors have described the unsettling sensation of being watched, even when entirely alone. Faint whispers are said to ride the breeze, and the soft sound of footsteps can sometimes be heard following close behind along the winding garden paths—only to vanish when anyone dares to turn and look.
