On 12 December 1849, a tragic drowning claimed the lives of 36 young men from Carrigaholt off the West Clare coast, near Mount Pleasant in the Clarefield townland.
The men, aged between 18 and 24, were believed to have travelled on foot to Kilrush in search of aid at the local workhouse during the height of the Great Famine. According to reports, they were turned away. Severely weakened by hunger, the group attempted to return home by boat but drowned in the waters near Mount Pleasant.
The Cox family, landlords residing in Mount Pleasant House, dispatched a rescue vessel into the darkness of that midwinter night. Of the 41 men involved, only five survived. The scale of the tragedy drew attention beyond Ireland, with coverage appearing in both British and Canadian newspapers.
Today, Mount Pleasant House stands in ruins, a shell of its former self. Locals say the spirits of those lost still linger, and at times, faint music is heard drifting from the abandoned structure—believed by some to be a haunting echo of the young lives lost at sea.
