An abandoned Masonic lodge in East Belfast has become the focus of grim speculation in recent years. Some believe that the building harbours a deeply troubled past—one allegedly tied to historic abuse claims. Local rumours suggest that children may have suffered mistreatment within its walls, and that some of those implicated were prominent individuals.
Among the names whispered in connection with such allegations is Lord Louis Mountbatten, a senior British royal and naval officer who was posthumously accused of abusing boys at various institutions. While no formal evidence links Mountbatten to this particular lodge, conspiracy theories have drawn parallels between his documented visits to Northern Ireland and the broader network of Masonic and institutional sites active at the time.
Whether grounded in fact or shaped by rumour, these stories have helped cultivate the lodge’s eerie reputation. Paranormal investigators and urban explorers have described strange experiences inside the now-derelict building: unexplained cold spots, childlike whispers, and fleeting glimpses of small figures in peripheral vision. Some locals claim the place is haunted by the restless spirits of children, whose suffering may never have found justice.
The atmosphere inside the abandoned lodge is described as oppressive—its faded regalia and crumbling architecture adding to a sense of unresolved anguish. To this day, the building is largely avoided by locals after dark, its dark reputation enduring long after its official closure.
