In 1938, Mr. J. Annesley told of a haunting at a farmhouse in Avoca known as Mineview House. According to him, a phantom carriage—drawn by ghostly horses and driven by a headless coachman—was said to pass along the road in front of the house.
Annesley described the strange events as follows:
“The residents would sometimes hear the crunch of wheels and hooves on the gravel outside at midnight. Suspecting a burglar, they would get out of bed and peer from the window—only to find nothing at all. Thinking it must have been a dream, they returned to bed.
The next morning, they went out to examine the gravel, looking for hoofprints or the ruts of carriage wheels, but there was no sign that anything had passed. They repeated the search on several mornings after hearing the sounds again, but always with the same result. In time, they simply stopped paying attention to it.”
